Suicide is defined as intentionally taking one’s own life. It is considered a criminal offense and sometimes a religious taboo. Attempted suicide is an attempt to take one’s life that does not end in death, rather self-injury.
But, Why Do People Commit Suicide?
While there are many factors that can influence a person’s decision to commit suicide, the most common one is severe depression. Those who are caged in depression start prioritizing death over life, they start glorifying the idea of death. Often, people suffer with it silently, planning suicide without anyone ever knowing. If you suspect someone might be depressed, help them.
“BUT IN THE END ONE NEEDS MORE COURAGE TO LIVE THAN TO KILL HIMSELF.”― ALBERT CAMUS
It is often reported that men have a lower rate of depression than women but what we don’t know is that men are at high risk of attempting suicide; however, this does not necessarily signify better overall mental health. The differences are more in how the depression is expressed and dealt with by the individual. Suicide In Pakistan
Men have the psychology to keep their emotions within themselves, they are less expressive as compare to women. The main culprit behind this non expressing behavior is our society, we always tells them not to cry , not to be weak, not to ask for help from others and what not so ever.
The feeling of pain is universal, we all can feel it, It is not a gender based thing but we keep them practicing to hide their feelings which leads to savior reaction.
According to WHO
- Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year.
- For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide every year. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-old.
- 79% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
- Ingestion of pesticide, hanging and firearms are among the most common methods of suicide globally.
A Survey Examining Gender Differences in Suicide
The sample consisted of 191 depressed adolescents, 108 males and 83 females aged 13–19 years old. Data collected for 10 years from 2005 to 2015 and their depressive symptoms were evaluated by Aaron T Beck ,the author of Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition.
Depressed girls felt sadness, guilt, punishment, worthlessness, low energy and fatigue, or more asthenia, whereas depressed boys have symptoms such as irritability, depression, suicidal thoughts, or desires to reduce their pleasure. The results of the test showed that the difference between the total scores of boys and girls with depressive disorder is significant at 0.001.

Old Age Men – Older than 50 years
Some studies also show that men aged 50 years and over have the highest suicide rate of any age group. The reason behind this is loneliness and lack of motivation.
Depression in women at their different life stages:
In general about twice as many women as men experience depression. Women have to deal with it more because of hormonal changes, pregnancy, and menstrual cycle. But still as compare to men, women’s suicidal rate is less. Because women are more expressive, their emotional capabilities are way stronger than men.
Teen Age Girls – In between 13 to 19 years
The experience of depression in teenage girls is somewhat similar to boys. The struggle of getting one’s own identity, the struggle for getting everyone’s approval, and the struggle of wanting to be seen as an adult quiet sums up every teenage mindset. Suicide In Pakistan
Although girls are more sensitive, the hunger for attention brings depression at their doorstep. Not being able to tackle rejections and failure may also lead them to be motivated towards attempting suicide. Although the risk in girls are less than boys.
Middle Age Women – In between 20 to 50 years
This is the age group that has the maximum risk. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the most common reason that causes depression to middle-age women can be a toxic marriage, parenting stress, change of lifestyle and environment, or a divorce. Of-course there are a lot of biological factors that cause depression to middle age women like pregnancy or hormonal changes etc.
Old Age Women – Older than 50 years
The suicidal thoughts emerge in individuals because of any negative and painful event mostly. Older people experience several situations such as retirement or widowing.
The risk factors for suicidal death can also be due to mental disorders, physical illness, and bereavement. Women aged 65 years and older mostly die from cardiovascular diseases, cancers, dementia, and respiratory diseases. The number of suicides is high but lower than other causes.
Men and women differ in their roles, responsibilities, status, and power and these socially constructed differences interact with biological differences to contribute to differences in their suicidal behavior. But as mentioned earlier most of the men do not have enough emotional ability to express themselves, on the other side women are more likely to articulate their distress and seek help. Men don’t do that. Suicide In Pakistan
Instead asking for help or seeking solution, they try to keep things to themselves ,they avoid discussions related to their problem and sometimes they suddenly start showing ‘Do not care’ board on their face. That’s why they are more likely to be attracted towards drug addiction, alcohol, road rage and even suicide.
We need to be aware and responsible to make sure that we listen and respect when someone is telling a story about their bad day, maybe you’re saving their life!
