The Government College University Lahore (GCU) has assigned a quota of 5 seats for the transgenders in undergraduate programs.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Asghar Zaidi stated that transgenders are welcome to compete for admissions on open merit but those who don’t qualify for the merit standard can avail these quota seats. GCU transgender seats

Prof. Asghar Zaidi says
“We need to educate and reform our society to a level where parents accept their transgender children and bought them up with similar attention and effort which they give to their sons and daughters.”
He also stated that educational institutes can play a role of catalyst to make this underprivileged community acceptable as doctors, engineers or accountants. He believes that other educational institutes should also fix a quota to them for their better future.
He stressed that special seats were also needed in schools and other higher education institutions for this underprivileged community.
There were already special seat quotas for other underprivileged children like disabled and minorities in GCU from Baluchistan, but this is the first time they assigned seats for the transgenders. GCU transgender seats.
However, it can be observed that India, our neighboring country has a Transgender Justice Board that provides security to the transgenders as their citizens.
The government there has sanctioned two seats exclusively for transgenders in all courses run by universities and affiliated arts and science colleges. The Indian court has also accepted transgenders as a third gender.
Analyzing the above facts and figures, it can be clearly stated that the step taken by this prestigious university is well thought and beneficial for the transgenders and the society as a whole to bring about unity among our younger generation and help remove all kinds of hatred from the society.
