Was Coronavirus predicted back in 1981?

On the 25th of February 2020, a tweet roamed on twitter. It was an excerpt from the novel ‘The Eyes of Darkness’, a 1981 thriller by bestselling suspense author Dean Koontz. That book had predicted the corona-virus back in 1981.

Coronavirus was predicted back in 1981?

The coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and which has now been detected in 50 locations internationally. As of 25 February, the outbreak has affected 80,000 people globally. In mainland China, there have been 2,663 deaths among 77,658 cases, mostly in the central province of Hubei.

The same is the case in the book. In chapter 39 of the book, the writer says that there is a lab in Wuhan city of China where a deadly virus is being created by a scientist named ” Li Chen”. Instead of Corona, the virus in the book is called Wuhan 400 because of its city of birth: Wuhan. At first, the name of the virus in the book was Gorki 400 which was in 1981 but in the latter edition, it was changed to Wuhan 400.

Says one character in the novel: ‘They call the stuff ‘Wuhan-400′ because it was developed at their RDNA labs outside the city of Wuhan.’

According to the book, this weapon was created by the Chinese government to destroy the city or countries, but some say it was created by foreign powers to bring the development of China at a halt.

Wuhan-400 is a perfect weapon. It afflicts only human beings. No other living creature can carry it. And like syphilis, Wuhan-400 can’t survive outside a living human body for longer than a minute, which means it can’t permanently contaminate objects or entire places the way anthrax and other virulent microorganisms can,’ a character from the book says.

China is on the list of becoming a superpower soon enough. It has seen a rise in its trade, tech and etc. So, according to Pg 136, 137, and 138 of the book, the virus was created to destroy the Chinese economy and to stop it from becoming a superpower and a leading economy.

Contradictions with the reality of virus

However, there are some points that do not go the same as of the book. “In the novel, “Wuhan-400” has a 100% fatality rate. While in reality, the fatality rate sits at about 2% ( worldometer.com). Not only this but another fact that is in the clash with the book is that in the novel winter says the virus can not survive outside the body for more than a minute but that is not the case in fact. The virus can stay up to 3 days outside its host body.

Something similar ever happened before?

If you are wondering if something similar ever happened before then the answer is YES. The fiction work turning into reality is not something new. A book The Wreck of the Titan or Futility by Morgan Andrew Robertson was published in 1898 which has also predicted the sinking of a giant fictional ship – called Titan – in North Atlantic after striking an iceberg. 14 years later we see a real ship named RMS Titanic sank in the ocean.
